Common Misconception

A lower repayment does not always mean cheaper finance

A lower repayment can result from a longer term or larger balloon payment. Compare the total cost and complete finance structure.

The repayment is often the first number people consider when comparing finance. It matters—but it does not reveal whether one option is cheaper than another.

A repayment can be reduced by extending the loan term, increasing the final balloon payment or changing the deposit. Each choice affects cash flow, total interest and the amount that may remain owing later.

How a lower repayment can cost more

A longer term spreads the amount financed across more payments. This will generally reduce the regular commitment, but interest may be charged for longer.

The business gains more breathing room now but may pay more over the life of the finance.

A larger balloon or residual payment can also reduce regular instalments. However, that portion of the debt does not disappear. A substantial final payment remains, and the business must plan to pay it, refinance it or use the asset’s sale or trade value towards it.

Fees and early-payout conditions also matter. A lower advertised rate may be outweighed by establishment fees, ongoing charges or less flexible early-termination conditions.

Compare the whole structure

Before choosing a finance option, compare:

• the amount financed and any deposit
• the interest rate and whether it is fixed or variable
• the repayment frequency and amount
• the complete finance term
• establishment and ongoing fees
• the balloon or residual payment
• the estimated total amount payable
• early-payout costs and flexibility
• whether the term suits the asset’s expected useful life

Cheapest is not always the only objective

The lowest total cost may require repayments that are too demanding during seasonal or uneven trading.

A structure with a higher total cost could still be appropriate if it protects essential working capital and the trade-off has been understood and chosen deliberately.

The important point is to know what is creating the lower repayment and what it means over the entire finance term.

Lendr360 can compare finance structures side by side so you can see more than the headline repayment before making a decision.

General information only. The appropriate finance structure depends on the borrower, asset, purpose and lender terms. Finance is subject to lender criteria, approval, fees and conditions.

MoneySmart confirms that balloon payments can lower regular instalments while generally increasing total cost, and that fees also affect the result.
